Chevy’s SS 396 became America’s most popular muscle car in 1968 in large part due to its new styling.  A two-door intermediate, three inches shorter than previous models, it featured shapely new styling for 1968.  As with most muscle cars it wasn’t the styling that attracted buyers, but the engine and drive-train packages offered.  The base Turbo-jet 396 had 325 horsepower; optional packages produced 350 and 375 horsepower for the L34 and L78 versions respectively.  A three-speed manual transmission was standard although a four-speed and automatic were available as options.  There were 62,785 Chevelle SS 396’s built in 1968 at a base price of $2,899.
