The 1965 Plymouth Sport Fury convertible was chosen to pace the Indianapolis 500 race.To commemorate the occasion, Plymouth produced 35 replicas, complete with ‘Official Pace Car’ graphics. These replicas were all powered by a 270 hp, 383 cid V -8 rather than the ‘wedge’, a 356 hp, 426 cid that powered the actual pace car. After the race, the replicas were distributed to dealerships around the country and raffled off to lucky customers. Major automakers now pay huge sums for the privilege to be named the ‘Official Pace Car’ and then sell thousands of the replica models.
