“A car bred in open competition and built for total performance” is how Ford described the 1964 Galaxie 500. With the different varieties of sedans, hardtops, convertibles and wagons available for 1964, there were 16 models to choose from.  Although sharing the same lines as the ’63 models, new trim moldings, grill, rear panel design, and all new interior trim set the 1964 model apart. Ford also offered six different engine choices for the Galaxie, led by the Thunderbird 390 V-8 at 300 horsepower and two versions of the 427 power plant.  The car that many feel was the most attractive Galaxie ever built was also legendary in racing. There were 37,311 of these convertibles produced in 1964 with a list price of $2,947.

Highlights:

  • Fourth and final year for this slightly more aerodynamic body style
  • Due to much improved quality control at Ford, the 1964 models earned a reputation for durability, comfort, and value
  • Price new: $2,936
