The Austin is a British automobile company which built the A40 Somerset form 1952 through 1954. The A40 Somerset replaced the aging Devon which was first produced in 1947. The Somerset was little more than a redesigned Devon with a slightly more powerful motor, a 1200 cc engine producing 42 horsepower. The Somerset shared its curvy body shape with the much larger A70 Hereford, a visually pleasing and well-proportioned car. Inside the Somerset featured a steering column change, front bench seat and an umbrella handbrake lever, all adding to the American theme. It was produced in two versions, a two-door convertible and a four passenger saloon. During its three years of production, 173,306 were built.
