Advertising by Chevrolet claimed that their new 1940 model would “out sprint, out ride, and out sell” all other low-priced cars. The “Royal Clipper Styling” was one of the elements that gave Chevrolet a new look in 1940. Three different models were offered – the Master 85, Master Deluxe, and the Special Deluxe. The Master 85 was the low-priced leader with a starting sale price at only $695.00, but it lacked any standard equipment accessories, and it used the outdated I beam axle. The Master and Special Deluxe models, on the other hand, rode on knee action suspension, which made quite a difference. New in 1940 on all models was the “Alligator” hood, hinged at the engine firewall. Also, 1940 saw the re-emergence of the Chevrolet convertible after it had been dropped in 1939. The new grille resembled that of the higher-priced Buick, and added was a longer wheelbase and larger windshield. Standard equipment appointed on the Special Deluxe was a stainless steel hood and belt line trim, dual wipers, deluxe steering wheel with horn ring, and a dashboard clock. Surprisingly, the Special Deluxe was the best seller, and prices could often exceed $900.00. The economy had rebounded by 1940, and production increased by 38%, keeping Chevrolet the automobile sales leader for another year.
